Mimi Walters 2018-10-24 2018 2018-10 Republican House CA Mimi Walters W000820 walters.house.gov     legacy October 24, 2018 (202) 225-5611 Historic Opioid Law Contains Important Provisions for Orange County Championed by Rep. Mimi Walters Washington, DC Today, Rep. Mimi Walters (R-California) released the following statement regarding enactment of H.R. 6, the Support for Patients and Communities Act. This historic bipartisan, bicameral legislation includes language modeled after two bills championed by Rep. Walters to help Orange County residents battling addiction. Rep. Walters' IMD CARE Act, which expands access to inpatient substance use disorder treatment for Medicaid recipients, is included in H.R. 6. The Orange County Board of Supervisors and several medical and government organizations endorsed Rep. Walters' bill, identifying it as one of the most critical policy changes needed to end the opioid epidemic. Learn more about the IMD CARE Act, Section 5052, here. The Ensuring Access to Quality Sober Living Act, a bill coauthored by Rep. Walters is also included in H.R. 6. This provision requires the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to establish best practices for operating recovery residences, commonly known as sober living facilities, to ensure patients receive the highest standard of substance addiction treatment. Learn more about the Ensuring Access to Quality Sober Living Act, Section 7031, here. Said Rep. Mimi Walters, Sadly, Orange County communities and families are not immune to the tragedies of the opioid crisis. A 2017 Orange County Health Care Agency report found that opioid dependence was the second leading cause of drug and alcohol-related hospitalizations in the County. Further, between 2013 and 2015, 56 percent of all opioid-related overdose deaths were the result of prescription opioid drugs. This landmark law is a bipartisan success that will save lives and improve safety in Orange County neighborhoods. The language modeled after my IMD CARE Act will improve access to addiction treatment programs for Medicaid recipients, while a provision I championed to provide best practice recommendations for sober living homes will ensure patients receive the quality care they deserve. While the fight to end the opioid crisis is not over, today marks a significant step forward to offer new hope to the millions of Americans affected by opioid addiction. Walters represents California's 45th District and serves on the House Energy & Commerce Committee and the House Ethics Committee. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
