Right now, employers can too easily game the system and hire undocumented workers and currently 11 million people are forced to live and work in the shadows. The bill I cosponsored represents a bipartisan opportunity to streamline our immigration system for families, workers and employers as well as strengthen Michigan’s economy through innovation and job creation.” The Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act, H.R. 15, would: Strengthen border security, outlining specific security goals that must be met to secure our borders. Additionally, the bill provides $14.8 billion in security measures, including funding for 3,500 CBP officers by 2017. Crack down on the hiring of undocumented workers, including expanding the E-Verify technology to crack down on illegal hiring. Unite millions of families by providing protecting workers and offering hardworking immigrants an earned pathway to citizenship after passing background checks, paying penalties and taxes, learning English and going to the back of the legal immigration line. Reform our outdated visa program and streamline legal immigration pathways, including expanding high and low-skilled visa programs. For less-skilled worker visas, employers are required to first recruit U.S. workers for their positions and attest that there are no U.S. workers for the jobs. In June, with a bipartisan vote of 68-32, the U.S. Senate passed a similar comprehensive immigration bill. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO), enactment of the bipartisan, Senate-passed comprehensive immigration bill would reduce the deficit by $850 billion. CBO also estimates that the bill would increase economic growth by 3.3 percent by 2023. “This bill represents a bipartisan compromise that has already passed the Senate. The House should now act to pass comprehensive immigration reform so both chambers can go to conference and ultimately get a bill before the end of the year to the President for his signature,” Congressman Kildee said. According to the CBO, 8.3 percent of Michigan business owners are immigrants, who annually generate $1.8 billion in income for Michigan each year. Additionally, 40.2 percent of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) graduates at state research-intensive schools are foreign born. “America has always been a nation of immigrants, who throughout our history have helped to make our country the best in the world.
