Issues Key Issues Legislation News News Biography Press Kit Contact Contact Newsletter Sign Up Biography About Debbie Photo Gallery Committee Assignments Senator Stabenow Announces Disaster Aid for 20 Michigan Counties Senator Debbie Stabenow, Chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee, today announced disaster aid for farmers in 20 Michigan counties that suffered damage from severe hail storms this summer. Farmers will be able to apply for disaster aid in the form of emergency loans from the Farm Service Agency (FSA). "We cannot allow Michigan farmers to be wiped out because of bad weather," said Stabenow. "This emergency declaration will help provide assistance for Michigan farmers. Agriculture supports nearly one in four jobs in Michigan and when parts of the industry are hit, it impacts our whole state's economy." The hail storms that led to today's disaster declaration occurred earlier this year, between June 10, 2013 and August 2, 2013. Farmers in the affected counties will have eight months from today's disaster designation to apply for emergency loans. The FSA will consider each application separately and take into account production losses as well as security and repayment ability. Growers should contact their local Farm Service Agency for more information. Huron, Jackson, Saginaw and Washtenaw counties were all designated as primary disaster counties. Sixteen counties were named contiguous disaster counties and are eligible for the same aid as primary counties: Bay, Calhoun, Eaton, Genesee, Gratiot, Hillsdale, Ingham, Lenawee, Livingston, Midland, Monroe, Oakland, Sanilac, Shiawassee, Tuscola and Wayne. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
