Hank Johnson (GA-04) honored Lithonia, Ga., teen Mary-Pat Hector from the House floor for being among 10 winners nationwide of the inaugural Peace First Prize for her campaign to combat gun violence. Hector launched the “Think Twice” campaign in April 2013 after the senseless shooting deaths of a 14-year-old Grayson High School student in Loganville and a 15-year-old student in Chicago. Hector earned $50,000 as part of her award and will use the funds to attend Spelman College, improve the “Think Twice” website, purchase public announcements and travel to schools spreading her message of peace. In his floor speech, Johnson called Hector an “everyday hero, a young constituent who has set an example we would all do well to follow.” “Mary-Patricia refused to sit idly by while children died in playgrounds, funerals outnumbered graduation ceremonies, and violence begot more violence. Her campaign encourages youth to think twice before picking up guns. I am proud of her achievements and glad to have the privilege of representing her.” Peace First is a national non-profit organization based in Boston that exists to create the next generation of peacemakers.
