https://web.archive.org/web/20131214202911/http://reed.house.gov/press-release/reed-looks-toward-us-energy-security-2020 REED LOOKS TOWARD U.S. ENERGY SECURITY BY 2020 2013-11-25 2013 2013-11 Republican House NY Tom Reed R000585 web.archive.org     legacy Congressman Reed Monday highlighted a positive trend for drivers across the country: lower gas prices due to a boom in North American energy development. The national gas price average is below last year’s low and continues to average about a quarter less per gallon than in 2012. “An abundant supply of North American oil is directly contributing to lower, more stable gas prices at the pump,” Congressman Reed said. “I am firmly committed to an “all-of-the-above” energy policy to continue this trend and achieve energy security for the United States within the decade. Hydraulic fracturing has unlocked previously inaccessible oil and natural gas resources, bringing with it manufacturing jobs, lower energy costs, and lower transportation costs.” Citing a recent CNN article, Reed said gas under $3 per gallon is being made possible by developing North American resources. Six states are already seeing gas prices below $3 per gallon with another six states within a nickel of that mark. According to the Oil Price Information Service, consumers can find gas prices under $3 per gallon at about 20 percent of gas stations throughout the country.   “Especially as families prepare to travel for Thanksgiving, this trend is welcome news for hardworking taxpayers who are able to keep more of their hard-earned money in their pockets,” Reed continued. “As we must approach this issue from a national security standpoint, developing North American resources also protects our sons and daughters from being put at risk in our military as we depend less on oil from the Middle East. We have an opportunity to become energy secure in front of us and we should not lose sight of that goal.” The CNN article is available here. ##### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
