Sherrod Brown (D-OH) applauded the passage of an amendment he introduced with U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), and was co-sponsored by U.S. Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA), that would help secure critical Transitional Medical Assistance (TMA) for working Ohio families. Currently, many low-income families lose Medicaid when their earnings increase, but become eligible for temporary Medicaid coverage for six months to a year. As a part of the Medicare Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) repeal bill, the Senate Finance Committee voted to pass Brown’s amendment which would extend TMA for an additional five years. “I applaud my colleagues for voting to extend Transitional Medical Assistance which, for decades, has helped keep millions of low income families healthy while they make the critical transition from unemployment to working or as they move up the employment ladder,” Brown said. “Americans shouldn’t have to choose between a job and health care. TMA provides extended Medicaid coverage to members of low income families who would otherwise lose Medicaid and potentially become uninsured because of an increase in hours or income from employment.” The TMA program is a critical source of health care coverage for low-income working families. It was established in 1984 under President Ronald Reagan, expanded in 1988 under Reagan, and given its current form in 1996 as part of welfare reform. TMA ensures that families can retain their Medicaid coverage as their income fluctuates, which is common among low-income families. This week, Brown alerted Ohioans that enrollment has begun for the state’s expanded Medicaid program through the health law. Because of the expansion, more than 300,000 Ohioans will now be eligible for health insurance beginning January 1, 2014. In October, Brown applauded Ohio’s decision to become the 25th state to expand Medicaid under the new health law. The Medicare SGR is a method used by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to control Medicare spending on physician services. The flawed system penalizes doctors for health care trends beyond their control, including changes in the quantity and types of health care services patients need. Each year Congress takes action to temporarily suspend these cuts. Medicare physician payments will be reduced by 25 percent in 2014 if Congress does not intervene. On December 12, the Senate Finance Committee, on which Brown serves, successfully passed a repeal of the SGR.
