They discussed how the Academy plans to address incidents of sexual assault at the academy, and ways to prevent continued violence going forward. "West Point is where the military shapes some of the United States' most valued and respected leaders," said McCaskill, who helped craft the host of reforms approved earlier this year by the Senate Armed Services Committee. "As one of the most prestigious leader development institutions in the military, it is critical that they set the model for addressing and rooting out the problem of sexual violence that has plagued our Armed Forces. Lieutenant General Caslen and I had a good conversation, and I look forward to partnering with him and others to implement significant and meaningful changes." McCaskill has relentlessly fought to combat sexual assaults in the military. Earlier this year, a Senate panel voted to approve a number of historic reforms addressing sexual assault, including provisions to strip commanders of their ability to overturn jury convictions, install civilian review of decisions to not prosecute cases, mandate dishonorable discharge or dismissal for anyone convicted of sexual assault, make it a crime to retaliate against victims who report a sexual assault, eliminate the statute of limitations in these cases, and many others.
