Sherrod Brown will back the tougher of two Senate Democratic measures aimed at curbing sexual assault in the military. Brown, D-Ohio, became the 52nd senator to back a defense-bill amendment sponsored by Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., that would prevent military commanders from making any decisions in cases involving sexual assault. In addition, her amendment would give military prosecutors the sole authority to bring charges. Brown said, “While the military has taken some important steps to address sexual assault, far too many American service members have faced unwanted sexual contact and assaults.
