As considered earlier this year in a Senate Science and Space Subcommittee hearing chaired by U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL), the U.S. commercial launch indemnification regime helps domestic launch companies compete in the global launch market. Many international competitors enjoy similar protections in their various home nations. The legislation, led by Nelson, would extend the expiration date of commercial launch indemnification from Dec. 31, 2013 to Dec. 31, 2016. Supporting Nelson’s initiative were Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Marco Rubio (R-FL), John Thune (R-SD), Mark Udall (D-CO), Tom Udall (D-NM), Mark Warner (D-VA), and Roger Wicker (R-MS). “A competitive launch industry is critical to our national space program, so this legislation is a common sense move,” said Nelson. “The certainty of a three year extension will help the U.S. commercial space industry continue to grow and thrive, both here in Florida and around the country.” The measure passed unanimously in the Senate and now goes to the House. ###	1	2026-03-30T12:14:52Z	2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
