JOSEPH - As employment rates continue to grow and the national deficit shrinks, U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill today held a jobs roundtable discussion with local business owners and elected officials to gather feedback on opportunities and challenges for area employers, and discuss ideas for continuing to create economic opportunity and job growth. "Our economy is continuing to mend, and more folks are finding work-but it's not happening as fast as we'd like," said McCaskill, who recently introduced bipartisan legislation to boost jobs through infrastructure projects. "That's why it's important for me to hear directly from Missourians on the ground about what policies would do the most to grow more job and business opportunities in our state." McCaskill and local business leaders and officials met at the St. Joseph Metro Chamber. Participants included St. Joseph Mayor Bill Falkner, Buchanan County Commissioners, and representatives from several local businesses. McCaskill has repeatedly advocated for Missouri's small business community-recently holding workshops in Kansas City and St. Louis with Google focused on how Missouri's small business can maximize their online opportunities. McCaskill has visited Maxion Wheels in Sedalia, the steel wheels plant on whose behalf she testified in a trade case against China to crack down on unfair trade practices by foreign competitors and ensure American manufacturers are competing on a level playing field. McCaskill also recently introduced bipartisan legislation-endorsed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, several labor unions, and the Business Roundtable-aimed at cutting down on burdensome and duplicative regulations, allowing infrastructure, development, and energy projects to be constructed more quickly, and providing a boost to the economy.
