"Standing side by side with our nation's heroes fills me with pride and serves as an important reminder for how critical it is that we bring attention to this tragic problem," said McCaskill, a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and daughter of a World War II veteran. "It's our obligation as a country to honor our military veterans and their families for the sacrifices they have made." McCaskill gave her remarks at the National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial in downtown Kansas City. She was flanked by several decorated area war veterans who brought with them a large array of incredible personal experiences, including one who took part in a large-scale POW rescue attempt while fighting for our country in Vietnam. McCaskill recently called on Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel to respond to reports suggesting that phony "arrival" ceremonies were being staged using military props and remains. McCaskill has also demanded answers about an internal report that found that the Pentagon's troubled POW/MIA servicemember recovery operation has been woefully mismanaged-and that senior officials may have suppressed the critical report, leading to a Senate hearing earlier this year. Additionally, the Government Accountability Office released a report showing that the Pentagon had given multiple groups overlapping authority and control over POW/MIA searches, and the recovery efforts lacked a cohesive mission, further illustrating the need for systemic reforms. The report also says that the various operations would be more efficient and transparent if they were centralized under a single command structure.
