Issues Key Issues Legislation News News Biography Press Kit Contact Contact Newsletter Sign Up Biography About Debbie Photo Gallery Committee Assignments Senator Stabenow Statement on Administration Meeting in Detroit U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow today released the following statement after a meeting of Cabinet Secretaries and local officials in Detroit to discuss the ongoing economic recovery of the city: "Today's meeting and announcement of major support is one more critical step in Detroit's revitalization. Support like this that comes through existing programs, which is available to cities across the country, can be a major boost for Detroit, Southeast Michigan and the entire state's economy. These partnerships will help Detroit come back stronger than ever. "Thanks to the commitment of many leaders across Southeast Michigan, Detroit's comeback has already begun. President Obama continues to show his willingness to partner with us to strengthen that comeback." Senator Stabenow was scheduled to attend today's meeting, but the Senate was called back into session today to deal with measures that could potentially avoid an effort by some Republicans to shut down the government. Instead, Senator Stabenow and other members participated in the meeting via teleconference. The Secretaries of Housing and Urban Development, Transportation, and the Attorney General joined Gene Sperling, Director of the White House National Economic Council, to announce over $300 million in new or repurposed support for Detroit through existing programs. The federal and state governments will partner with the private sector and local philanthropic groups to help improve public safety, reduce blight, improve transportation systems in the city and help support the ongoing economic revival in Detroit. Additional meetings with Administration officials will take place in Detroit in the coming weeks and months to discuss ways to continue Detroit's economic revitalization. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
