To be considered for an appointment to a service academy, an applicant must receive a nomination from an authorized person, such as a Member of Congress. “One of my favorite duties as a Member of Congress is nominating the best and brightest young men and women of Connecticut’s Fourth District to our nation’s service academies,” said Himes. “Our nation’s service academies develop students physically, ethically, and intellectually as they build the foundation for a challenging and rewarding career as a military officer. I invite any highly motivated, well-rounded, successful student to consider applying to these prestigious schools.” The deadline to apply for a nomination to the Military Academy at West Point, the Naval Academy in Annapolis, the Merchant Marine Academy in New York, or the Air Force Academy in Colorado for the 2014-15 school year is December 2, 2013. The Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut does not require a nomination, but if a student would like to be considered for a nomination to the Coast Guard Academy, materials should be by the December 2 deadline. Himes may nominate applicants who legally reside within the boundaries of Connecticut's 4th Congressional District. Applicants must also be between 17 and 23 years old, a United States citizen, unmarried, not pregnant, and have no legal obligation to support children or other dependents.
