Missouri's Honor Flight program brought Kansas City-area veterans to the Memorial on the National Mall today, where McCaskill met them to personally thank them for their service, hear their stories, and talk about issues facing Missouri's veterans. "As we mark the anniversary of the deadly terror attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001, and honor our servicemembers defending us today, it is important to also pay tribute to those who served and fought for the freedoms we enjoy," said McCaskill, a daughter of a World War II veteran and senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. "I applaud these men and women for their service, and join all Missourians and Americans in saying ‘thank you' for defending our country." Last year McCaskill honored World War II veterans from Honor Flight programs from around Missouri. Photos from today's event can be viewed HERE. The Honor Flight Network is a non-profit program that brings WWII veterans from across the country to visit the WWII Memorial and other memorials around Washington. The flights typically visit Arlington National Cemetery, the Iwo Jima Memorial, the Lincoln and Vietnam Memorials. McCaskill has been an outspoken advocate for military veterans since joining the Senate in 2007-she helped to pass the 21st Century GI Bill, established a veterans' "secret shopper" program to improve health care services for Missouri's veterans, and was a founding member of The Veterans Jobs Caucus. Following reports of neglect, McCaskill successfully pushed for the removal of Army officials managing Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and she led the successful effort to reform management of Arlington National Cemetery after disclosures of mismarked gravesites.
