The Pentagon can and should be a partner in preventing these terrible crimes, protecting and empowering survivors, and locking up perpetrators. And I welcome any steps they take with those goals in mind. Today's announcement has little bearing on the fact that Congress will soon mandate a host of historic reforms-but it's evidence that the Defense Department is now treating this problem with the seriousness that we expect, and that survivors deserve." Some of the measures announced today are drawn from bipartisan, bicameral legislation which McCaskill introduced earlier this year. McCaskill has relentlessly fought to combat sexual assaults in the military. The Senate Armed Services Committee recently gave unanimous approval to a series of aggressive, historic reforms addressing sexual assault, including bipartisan, bicameral provisions by McCaskill that will significantly boost accountability for perpetrators and protections for survivors.
