The most recent tragedy is the fifth serious incident in a little more than six months raising serious questions about commitment to safety practices and culture, as well as equipment and maintenance. “Unspeakably dangerous speed and reckless operation, resulting from human or equipment failure or both, are ultimately Metro-North’s responsibility. Metro-North must prove by action not merely words its commitment to safety and reliability, adopting every and any measure, such as positive train control, that invests in these priorities. “The governor is absolutely right that Connecticut has demonstrated its commitment to providing resources and support. My hope is that federal government will do the same through steps like a rail trust fund and infrastructure bank that I have proposed.
