While experiencing significant destruction to four Townships along the Delaware Bay, the level of damage across the county did not meet the federal threshold to qualify Cumberland County with the nine (9) hardest hit counties including Atlantic, Cape May and Ocean counties. The full text of the letter to Governor Christie is as follows: October 28, 2013 Dear Governor Christie: As our state receives the next portion of relief money from Washington in response to Superstorm Sandy, I wanted to contact you directly about an area of concern that I have with recovery assistance needed in the Bayshore communities of Cumberland County. As I explained in my August letter to Marc-Philip Ferzan in your office of Recovery and Rebuilding, several smaller communities – namely the Townships of Commercial, Downe, Maurice River, and Lawrence - were hit hard by the storm and have struggled with their recovery efforts during the last year. Hundreds of homeowners in these communities have been unable to get help from federal funds obligated to New Jersey due to the rules in place limiting assistance to residents in the nine most damaged counties. However, as you well know, Sandy’s impact on these Bayshore residents was just as devastating as the damage suffered by other New Jerseyans in many Jersey Shore communities. We appreciate the state’s efforts to date to assist them but, the impacted communities along the Bayshore are still reeling from the storm and the slow recovery and are in need of your commitment to help rebuild and recover alongside their coastal neighbors. I would urge you and your Administration to continue to explore every possible option to help speed financial assistance from this new infusion of money from Washington to the Delaware Bayshore communities. This assistance will help them recover in the same fashion as the coastal communities and to ensure that every corner of New Jersey can rebuild, recover, and rise together. Additionally, I understand that the federal government is still engaged in discussions with your Administration over access to and restrictions on use of the recovery money. I would be happy to continue to work with you and members of your Administration to help lend support for actions to free up resources for the recovery and to ensure that New Jersey has the full benefits from the money that I and the other members of our delegation fought for in the weeks after Sandy’s impact. Thank you for your help in this matter and I look forward to continue working with you to bring about New Jersey’s full recovery. Sincerely, # # # | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
