| https://web.archive.org/web/20140301025558/http://reed.house.gov/press-release/reed-updates-farm-bill-progress | REED UPDATES ON FARM BILL PROGRESS | 2013-12-10 | 2013 | 2013-12 | Republican | House | NY | Tom Reed | R000585 | web.archive.org | legacy | Congressman Tom Reed today said the conference committee completing work on the Farm Bill continues to close gaps between the House and Senate-passed bills and is nearing a resolution. “What’s important is that the Farm Bill talks continue and a fair resolution is agreed upon that meets the needs of farmers,” Congressman Reed said. “As the conference committee continues its work, my hope is that the committee keeps the big-picture in mind: a long-term, five-year Farm Bill that gives farmers the tools they need to provide our families with affordable, safe food.” Reed says the input he took to Washington on the Farm Bill came directly from district farmers who Reed says provided “invaluable, front-line input and insight.” On the farm programs side, Congressman Reed said many of the reforms being ironed out are what Finger Lakes and Southern Tier farmers say will help them do their jobs better: reforms to crop insurance, the continuation of the Specialty Crop Research Initiative, and reforms to dairy programs. In the Nutrition Title of the Farm Bill which includes the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) commonly referred to as food stamps, Reed is working on reforms to give able-bodied adults without children opportunities to work, engage in job training, or volunteer in the community to empower them to be self-sufficient. “It is important that food stamp-related reforms help individuals move toward self-sufficiency,” Reed said. “Helping individuals move toward self-sufficiency with job skills should be the goal of the program, rather than trapping them in a limitless program which traps individuals in poverty and does nothing to help them become more financially independent.” ##### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
