Deutch, Frankel, Hastings, and Murphy for Flood Map Extension Granted by FEMA 2013-12-04 2013 2013-12 Democrat House FL Lois Frankel F000462 web.archive.org     legacy Washington, DC—The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has granted a request from U.S. Representatives Ted Deutch (FL-21), Lois Frankel (FL-22), Alcee L. Hastings (FL-20), and Patrick Murphy (FL-18) to give Palm Beach County officials time beyond the November 30th deadline to submit comments and technical data on flood map proposals for the region. This extension will allow local officials and scientists to continue contributing data and suggestions for the final flood maps, which need to be accurate in order to protect many homeowners from unaffordable flood insurance rates. “Flaws in the preliminary flood maps released by FEMA would hurt Palm Beach County’s economy by saddling homeowners with unaffordable flood insurance rates and reducing consumer spending at local businesses,” said Congressman Ted Deutch. “This extension will help ensure that the flood maps are accurate, the science is sound, and the remapping process is fair.”  “Keeping flood insurance affordable is a must for South Florida families,” Congresswoman Lois Frankel said. “Sharp increases in flood insurance rates will continue to be an important issue for Floridians. It is a problem that we must resolve together and I appreciate FEMA’s understanding of the situation. I look forward to working on solutions that are acceptable to all,” said Congressman Alcee L. Hastings.  "Because of the huge impact these final flood maps will have on our local economy, real estate market, and mitigation efforts, it is crucial to provide the time necessary to make sure they are accurate and scientifically sound," said Congressman Murphy.  "This process must be done right to protect homeowners from facing outrageous flood insurance rate hikes, and I welcome this much-needed extension." The Palm Beach County congressional delegation has also sponsored the bipartisan Homeowner Flood Insurance Affordability Act, which would require the National Flood Insurance Program take affordability issues into account before implementation. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
