I cosponsored today’s bill because it puts the power back in the hands of the people by adding a measure of accountability and transparency to the national monument designation process. Hundreds of people in Southern New Mexico stood up, and demanded that the Secretary of the Interior listen to their voice on the Organ Mountains. H.R. 1459 ensures they have a say.” Under this bill, national monument designations using the Antiquities Act would undergo strong environmental analysis and studies under the National Environmental Policy Act, just like other land management decisions, before a designation could be finalized. Monument designations would be limited in number without approval of Congress.
