The bill provides $17 billion in funding to improve access and quality of care for veterans, expand the VA's capacity to provide care to veterans, bring needed accountability to the VA, and improve education benefits for veterans and their dependents. The bill passed the House by a vote of 420 to 5. "This bill is an important first step towards bringing needed accountability to the VA and improving access to care for our veterans," Rep. Heck said. "I'm glad House and Senate leaders were able to agree to this compromise and put the needs of our veterans first, but our work is far from done. I will continue working with local veterans, veterans service organizations, and VA officials, as well as my colleagues in Congress, to make sure that the House of Representatives and the VA are both responsive to the needs of those men and women who have made great sacrifices for our country.” In addition, Rep. Heck will introduce legislation tomorrow that would improve access to care for veterans by requiring the Department of Veterans Affairs to accept the credentials of Department of Defense physicians and expedite the granting of clinical privileges. In some cases, DoD-credentialed doctors wishing to treat patients at a VA facility have to wait months to be granted the proper clinical privileges needed to practice. The VA Credentialing and Privileging Improvement Act would streamline this process and allow more doctors to practice within the VA, thus improving access to care for veterans. "The policies in the VA reform bill will take some time to implement," Rep. Heck said. "My bill would help bridge the access to care gap at VA facilities by immediately allowing DoD physicians to practice within the VA system. More doctors will shorten wait times for our veterans while maintaining the quality of care they deserve." Related: Las Vegas Review-Journal editorial says Rep. Heck's proposal to streamline privileging process "would be extremely helpful for Las Vegas veterans."
