Along with fellow letter carrier Steve Plunkett, District Manager Peter Allen, SSA Clerk Karen Leitner, and supervisor Stacey Pence-Baily, Perfetti received the National Association of Letter Carrier’s Heroes of the Year Award, among the top honors given to U.S. Postal Service employees. Rep. Schock recognizes Ms. Perfetti for her Heroes of the Year Award “A hero has been defined as a person who walks willingly into the darkness carrying a light so others can walk to freedom,” Schock said. “Last year, Cristy observed one of the darkest horrors about to unfold, and she stopped it. Today, a predator is locked away for good, and a boy is safe with his family. For this, and for many other acts of service to our community that we may never know, Cristy deserves the title ‘hero.’ I’m honored to join the National Association of Letter Carriers in recognizing her service.” In May of 2013, Perfetti, who has carried mail for 23 years, was returning from her route when she spotted a man walking with a 10-year-old boy through the post office parking lot. In response to what Perfetti describes as the boy’s scared and unwavering look in her direction, the veteran postal worker ran inside the station and alerted her supervisor, Stacie Pence-Bailey, of the situation. Perfetti and Pence-Bailey proceeded to confront the man. In response to the boy’s crying and disclosure that the man was not his father, the postal workers secured the boy, causing the predator to flee. Perfetti and co-worker, Steve Plunkett, then tracked the suspect until police arrived and arrested the man.
