The game statistics were as one sided as the score: 34 first downs to just 7 for Towson, and 606 total yards for the Mountaineers to just 122 for the Tigers. Admittedly not too much can be made of dominating overmatched opposition, but on the other hand West Virginia had two such opponents on their schedule in 2013 and weren't able to fully control either. The Mountaineers were only able to defeat FCS William & Mary with a winning touchdown in the final few minutes, and struggled for three quarters against what turned out to be a winless Georgia State squad. So let's be happy at this point with dispatching Towson in an emphatic way. That is what good teams are supposed to do. Dana Holgorsen's complex offense is very quarterback driven. Quick decisions, proper reads, and good execution are required. When Geno Smith was at the helm in Holgorsen's first two years West Virginia averaged 38 points per game. But last season with inconsistent and ineffective quarterback play the Mountaineers' scoring production dropped by a third.
