The House of Representatives will vote on H.R 3350 this week. “While I’m pleased with the provisions in the Affordable Care Act that protect consumers both healthy and sick, some aspects of the ACA need to be fixed. Later this week, the House of Representatives will vote on legislation titled Keep Your Health Plan Act of 2013. The legislation would allow plans available on the individual market today to be offered for the next year and be exempt from certain ACA requirements. “It’s important to note that in New Hampshire, people who buy individual market policies from Anthem already have the option of renewing their current coverage by November 15th, and keeping their hospital network and doctors for another year. I’m glad this option is being offered in the Granite State, and it should be available to all Americans with individual-market plans for the next year, even if those plans offer fewer protections, benefits, and subsidies than policies on the Marketplace (exchange). “Barring last minute amendments, I will support H.R. 3350. If this legislation comes up for a vote in its current form, I will vote yes. In the coming week, I urge Democrats and Republicans not to tinker with this common sense legislation. Now is not the time to score political points by adding partisan amendments in the dark of night. “The Affordable Care Act is not a perfect law, and it still needs fixes, but we can’t go back to the days when getting sick meant health insurance companies could deny coverage, or cancel a person’s policy and plunge them into bankruptcy due to unpaid medical bills.
