The announcement follows Sinema’s August letter in support of the City of Phoenix’s request for the grant. “I am pleased that the Department of Transportation responded to our letter with $1.6 million grant funding for the Central Phoenix Multimodal Transportation Improvements project,” said Sinema. “This vital investment will enhance the transportation network within Phoenix while supporting local job growth and economic development.” The transportation project will boost mobility within South Central Phoenix and greatly improve the quality of life for area residents. "Extending light rail is critically important to south Phoenix and the entire region and this grant is a significant step toward that goal," Mayor Greg Stanton said. "I'm grateful to Congresswoman Sinema for her support as we work to expand light rail to new areas of our community." Under the grant, the City of Phoenix will revitalize several pieces of infrastructure, support existing transit services, and conduct environmental assessments and conceptual engineering efforts for future light rail transit needs.
