A vote on the legislation, commonly referred to as a ‘clean’ continuing resolution, would open the entire federal government immediately, as it has already been passed by the U.S. Senate and would go straight to President Barack Obama for his signature. “The solution to this crisis is a simple piece of legislation that funds the government at levels that have already passed both chambers of Congress,” the letter reads. “We demand a vote on a clean continuing resolution immediately so that government functioning can resume and Americans can move on with their lives.” “With the government shutdown entering its second week, it’s time that Speaker Boehner allows for a vote to immediately reopen our government,” Congressman Kildee said. “Each day the government remains closed for business, our economy suffers, job creation is threatened and our country is left with less security and stability. This is no way to govern and no way to run the largest economy in the world. I demand a vote to immediately reopen the government so my constituents can move on with their lives.” Since the shutdown, Congressman Kildee, along with his Democratic colleagues, have tried seven times to bring up a vote on the Senate-passed continuing resolution, which would fund government at levels passed by both chambers of Congress and end the shutdown immediately. However, Speaker Boehner has blocked a vote on each of the Democrats’ common sense measures to reopen the government every time. The unnecessary government shutdown is having a devastating impact on Michigan and the nation’s economy. Last week, State Budget Director John Nixon said that each day of the government shutdown is costing Michigan $18 million a day. Nationally, the shutdown is costing more than $300 million in taxpayer dollars every day. Today marks the fifth day that the federal government has been shut down. Please consider how deeply unfair this is to the citizens we represent. At this point, to attach defunding or delaying the Affordable Care Act to legislation needed to re-open the government is to put our economy at risk in order to advance a political agenda. We demand a vote on a clean continuing resolution immediately so that government functioning can resume and Americans can move on with their lives. The games have to stop.
