Ed Whitfield (KY-01), Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Energy and Power, today voted for H.R. 3350, the Keep Your Health Plan Act. H.R. 3350 allows health insurers to offer in 2014 those health insurance plans currently available in the individual market. Over 5 million Americans have been notified that they will have their current health care plans cancelled as a result of Obamacare. “President Obama has repeatedly made the statement that if you like your health care then you can keep it,” stated Whitfield. “As we now know, that is not the case, and over five million people have already received their cancelation notices. This legislation creates a pathway for Americans to keep their current health care plans, just as the President has promised.” H.R. 3350 allows people to keep their current health insurance plans for an additional year. Specifically, the bill allows health insurance companies in the individual market to continue to offer health policies that were in effect as of Jan. 1, 2013, even if they don't meet minimum coverage requirements set by Obamacare. The legislation is designed in response to President Barack Obama’s broken “if you like it, you can keep it” promise. On October 28, NBC reported that the administration has known for years it could not keep this promise. According to the report, 50 to 75 percent of Americans who purchase insurance in the individual market can expect to receive a cancellation letter or the equivalent over the next year.
