LoBiondo (NJ-02) today announced $625,000 in federal funding for the Wildwood Police Department under the Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Program (CHP). “As a long-time supporter of the COPS program, I know it continues to be a valuable tool to assist local law enforcement with their ongoing efforts to protect our communities and hire or retain qualified men and women,” said LoBiondo, a member of the Congressional Law Enforcement Caucus. “I am pleased Wildwood will be receiving federal funding for this important initiative.” “This grant will do volumes for us. Most of all, it allows our police department to do the most important thing for our community: protect it,” said Mayor of Wildwood, Ernie Troiano, Jr. “I appreciate Congressman LoBiondo’s dedicated service to not only our local community, but our entire region.” CHP provides funding to address the full-time sworn officer needs of state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies nationwide.  CHP grants go directly to law enforcement agencies to hire new and/or rehire career law enforcement officers in an effort to increase their community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts.  Priority consideration was given to agencies that requested officer positions in order to deploy school resource officers, build trust between the police and community, hire military veterans, focus on homicide or gun violence, have a neighborhood or other geographic area designated as a Promise Zone as part of the President's Promise Zone Initiative, and/or have experienced an unanticipated catastrophic event. This year’s CHP grants provide 75 percent funding for approved entry-level salaries and benefits for three years (36 months) for newly-hired, full-time sworn officer positions (including filling existing unfunded vacancies) or for rehired officers who have been laid off, or are scheduled to be laid off on a future date, as a result of local budget cuts.  Any additional costs above the approved entry-level salaries and fringe benefits, up to $125,000, are the responsibility of the grantee agency. The COPS program is managed by the U.S. Department of Justice.
