LoBiondo (NJ-02) today announced the Maurice River Township Fire District #1 - Leesburg Station 26 will receive $75,644 for a federal Operations and Safety grant through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. “On the heels of today’s COPS grant announcement, South Jersey’s emergency responders continue to receive great news,” said LoBiondo, a member of the Congressional Fire Caucus. “This funding will keep the men and women of Leesburg Station 26 safe with new personal protective equipment and standard firefighting gear. Once again, South Jersey fire companies continue to receive federal funding through the AFG program.” “I am very excited for this grant. It is a tremendous help for us, especially being a smaller community,” said Fire Chief Michael Phillips. “It will prevent us from having to look elsewhere to get the needed revenue for this important equipment.” The Leesburg Fire Company has previously been awarded two AFG grants for the purchase of safety equipment in the amounts of: $55,711 (2004) and $97,745 (2003). The Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program awards grants directly to fire departments and emergency services to support their efforts to protect the communities they serve. The Fiscal Year 2014 program will award approximately $340 million in competitive grants to first responder organizations across the country to obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training, and other resources required to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) administers the program. For the last ten years, Congressman LoBiondo’s office has hosted local seminars for area fire departments to highlight the benefits of this grant program and assist with the application process.
