These grants will support programs including biomedical research at Arizona State University, school resource officers at Arizona schools, and self-sufficiency programs for at-risk families in Congressional District 9. Grants Awarded in CD9 Department of Housing and Urban Development City of Phoenix Awarded $3.4 million for Lead Paint Removal The City of Phoenix received $3 million in Lead Based Paint Hazard Control grant program funding and an additional $400,000 in healthy homes initiative funding. The City of Phoenix will address lead hazards in 190 housing units, providing safer homes for low and very low-income families with children. The grant will also provide for healthy homes assessments in 160 units. The City of Phoenix will collaborate with partners in education, public health, and city agencies. HUD Public Housing Family Self-Sufficiency Awards This funding provides cities with the resources to staff their Family Self-Sufficiency Program (FSS). FSS offers participants in the Housing Choice Voucher Program a number of services, including social supports, networking, job search, budget management, etc. FSS Program Managers meet regularly throughout the year to share best practices and successes and to establish goals for the city programs. The following cities in CD9 received FSS grants: City of Chandler: $120,717.00 City of Mesa: $68,107.00 City of Scottsdale: $68,107.00 City of Tempe: $68,107.00 Department of the Army Vernadero Group Awarded $9.9 million Army Barracks Renovation Contract Vernadero was awarded this shared contract for repair, building, and renovation of barracks and other military facilities at various locations in the US and Puerto Rico. Vernadero is a veteran-owned small business in CD9 founded in 1999 to provide infrastructure and environmental program support to DoD installations and activities. Department of Health and Human Services Tumbleweed Center Awarded $500,000 to Combat Human Trafficking The Tumbleweed Center for Youth and Development received a $500,000 grant from the Family & Youth Services Bureau of the US Administration of Children and Families.The funding will strengthen existing collaboration between agencies, and will provide comprehensive treatment and case management to victims of human trafficking. The Tumbleweed Center serves homeless and vulnerable young men and women, ages 12-25, in Maricopa County. Edkey, Inc Awarded $100,000 by Center for Mental Health Services This funding supports Edkey's new Behavioral Health Program at its Children First Academy and Sequoia Campuses in Mesa. Funding will be used to train faculty, staff, and volunteers in mental health first aid for students.The Children First Academy serves students from families who are homeless, low-income, or in transition. ASU’s iMPACT Center and Dr. Sandeep Gupta Receive $213,000 The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering awarded this grant to Dr. Gupta's team at ASU's iMPACT Center.The grant will support iMPACT’s work in developing a heart-monitoring device that will last for one month without a battery change. Currently, heart monitoring device batteries must be changed every 48 hours. This new device will work in partnership with smart phones and provide medical emergency alerts. $324,449 Awarded to ASU’s Dr. Xiao Wang The National Institute of General Medical Sciences awarded this grant to Dr. Wang and his biomedical engineering team. The funding supports the lab's ongoing work in understanding cell differentiation. ASU's Southwest Interdisciplinary Research Center Receives $291,708 Dr. Marsiglia is the Director of the Southwest Interdisciplinary Research Center, which is part of the ASU School of Social Work. Dr. Marsiglia received funding to continue his research on minority health and health disparities. $145,000 Awarded to Native American Community Health Center Native American Community Health Center received this funding for operational costs for their community health centers throughout the valley. Department of Justice Arizona Department of Education Receives $5 million for School Resource OfficersThe National Institute of Justice awarded this funding to support research on the effectiveness of School Resource Officers. The study will examine school climate and school safety at 90 middle, junior, and high schools throughout the state. $769,188 Awarded to the Arizona Governor’s Office for Children, Youth and Families This funding from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention will support state and local delinquency prevention and intervention programs. Grant Opportunities VA Grants to Combat Veteran Homelessness New funding is available for three-year non-renewable grants to non-profit organizations working to end veteran homelessness. The $207 million in grants available through the Supportive Services for Veteran Families Program will help 70,000 homeless and at-risk veterans and their families. The grants will be distributed to 82 non-profit agencies and include "surge" funding for 56 high need communities.Click here for additional information about this program. NIH Small Business Grants for Reducing Health Disparities The National Institutes of Health is offering this grant to encourage small businesses to develop technologies for improving minority health and eliminating health disparities.Grants will be used by small businesses to develop technologies that improve health outcomes for racial/ethnic minorities, low-income, and rural populations. Click here to learn more. Department of Housing and Urban Development Jobs Plus Pilot Program HUD is now accepting applications for its Jobs Plus program. The program will help public housing agencies develop locally-based job training and placement programs.
