Bush—to alleviate some of the most dysfunctional aspects of the country’s immigration system, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) released the following statement: “When Congress refused to act to address immigration system flaws during the George H.W. Bush Administration, President Bush he took executive action to fix the most glaring problems and to keep families together, similar to moves by several other Republican Presidents including Eisenhower and Reagan and similar in scale to President Obama’s recently-announced immigration actions. President Bush recognized at the time that he had the undisputed authority to use prosecutorial discretion to set enforcement policies for immigration agents. And he did so in a humane and reasonable manner. President Obama’s announcement last night falls within well-established precedents set by several former Presidents, and I hope President Bush will come out forcefully in support of these moves and in defense of the office of the President.
