(OH-02) and Congresswoman Terri Sewell (AL-D) introduced the Rural-Urban Physician Workforce Act of 2020. The legislation provides greater flexibility for rural and urban hospitals to partner on cross-training medical residents. Rural Ohioans are experiencing firsthand the difficulties posed by physician shortages, and the pandemic has only worsened the problem. We know that doctors frequently practice medicine in the area in which they completed their residency programs. Therefore, we need to remove barriers to physician training in rural areas, said Congressman Wenstrup. Our bipartisan bill accomplishes this by giving more flexibility to both rural and urban hospitals so they partner together and meet our workforce needs. Alabamians deserve high-quality, affordable health care no matter where they live.
