Wilson today applauded the U.S. Department of Education's award of Federal TRIO grants to Miami-Dade and Broward Colleges. The grants will assist low-income students, disadvantaged youth, and first-generation college students in Miami-Dade and Broward counties by strengthening the training of TRIO educators in the state. "These grants will go a long way to improving the chances for success of students at Miami-Dade and Broward Colleges," said Congresswoman Wilson. "As a lifelong advocate for education, it is important that we do all we can to ensure their chances to succeed and improve their station in life. I am excited for the additional opportunities these grants will create." Miami-Dade College was awarded $236,900, which the school has historically allocated for scholarship and financial aid counseling, tutoring, intensive academic advisement, individualized education planning, services for students with disabilities, career exploration assistance, job placement, peer mentoring, leadership development activities, and cultural enrichment. The $236,000 awarded to Broward College marks the first time the school has received a TRIO gtant TRIO Programs are federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. The grant recipients are institutions of higher education, public and private agencies and organizations with experience in serving disadvantaged youth and secondary schools. Congresswoman Wilson has fought for increased education grants throughout her career.
