Representative Rob Wittman (VA-1) released the following statement today regarding Congressional delegation meetings with newly-elected Afghan leadership: In connection with a CODEL focused on oversight of operations against ISIS in the Middle East, Representative Rob Wittman led a Congressional delegation including Representative Madeleine Bordallo of Guam, Representative Dave Loebsack of Iowa, Representative Mike Coffman of Colorado, Representative Bill Flores of Texas, and Representative Reid Ribble of Wisconsin to Qatar, Afghanistan and Jordan. In Afghanistan, the delegation met with President Ashraf Ghani and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdullah Abdullah to discuss the Bilateral Security Agreement which passed the lower house of the Afghan parliament during the meeting and was proudly announced to the delegation by President Ghani. The Status of Forces Agreement with NATO was also endorsed by the lower house of parliament. This was the first Congressional delegation from the U.S. House of Representatives to meet with Afghanistan's new leadership and congratulate them on the establishment of Afghanistan's first ever unity government and peaceful transition of government power, Wittman said. It is critical that dialogue between the leaders of our two countries continues to ensure thesafe and responsible withdrawal of our troops from Afghanistan and to meet the goals of strengthening Afghan forces, countering the threat of terrorism and improving security in the region.
