Lamar Alexander *Video of the senator's full remarks is available here.* WASHINGTON, December 4, 2018 United States Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today introduced Tennessean A.B. Culvahouse, Jr., at his confirmation hearing to serve as Ambassador of the United States of America to the Commonwealth of Australia before the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee. It is my privilege today to introduce to the committee Arthur B. Culvahouse, Jr. He is the most accomplished lawyer I know, and I do not know many public servants more accomplished than he is. That might sound like an extravagant claim, but I mean it sincerely, Alexander said. He had the great advantage of being born and raised in Ten Mile, Tennessee, so that got him off to a good start. Alexander continued, Culvahouse became legislative counsel to Howard Baker, our senator [from Tennessee] who later became majority leader of the United States Senate. He became counsel to both John McCain and Donald Trump during their campaigns as they began to consider vice presidential selections. He was counsel to President Ronald Reagan while he was in the White House. And in the midst of all of that, he has been the chairman of one of the world's largest law firms, O'Melveny and Myers. All of [these] activities have established him as enormously well-qualified for this position. I'm more than a little jealous that he is the Tennessean who gets to be the Ambassador to Australia. If he's confirmed by the Senate, which I hope he will be, he will have a wonderful experience ahead of him. After completing his second term as governor, Alexander lived six months with his family in Australia in 1987. Alexander told a story about Australia at today's hearing: The English are our ancestors. The Australians are our cousins, and I would suggest they are our first cousins. They deserve to have as the representative of our country to them, one of our finest.
