Below are some of the steps Congress has taken to aid veterans and their families so far this year: On May 24, 2018, the Senate passed the VA (MISSION) Act to help veterans find health care closer to home.Among the many benefits of the legislation, veterans in Tennessee will now have the ability to seek medical care outside the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) regardless if they are able to get into a VA facility within 30 days or live more than 40 miles away from a VA health care facility. President Trump signed the legislation into law on June 6, 2018. On March 1, 2018, the Senate passed the Veterans Cemetery Benefit Correction Act, whichrequires the U.S. Department of the Interior to provide burial vaults for veterans buried in national cemeteries managed by the National Park Service,including Andrew Johnson National Cemetery in Greeneville, Tennessee. President Trump signed the legislation into law on June 15, 2018. On September 25, 2018, the Senate passed theVeterans' Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2018 to increase veterans' disability benefits based on rising costs of living.
