If Republicans in Congress fail to extend these tax breaks, the 24 million Americans who have ACA coverage will see on average a 75% jump in their premiums next year, including four million Americans who will be priced out and lose coverage. Senator Baldwin leads legislation to make these tax credits permanent. “At a time when Wisconsin families just want a little breathing room, Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans are about to jack up the cost of health care for millions of Americans. This president promised to lower costs on day one. Instead, he’s doled out tax breaks to big corporations and his super wealthy friends while leaving working families to foot the bill,” said Senator Baldwin. “In a few short weeks, millions of Americans will get a letter in the mail that says their premiums are going to skyrocket next year. Unless Republicans step up and do the right thing, I’ll make sure my constituents know just who is to blame.” Tuesday, Senators Baldwin, Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), and Chuck Schumer (D-NY) hosted a press conference on Capitol Hill to call on Republicans to extend these tax credits. The Senators were joined by two storytellers – a small business owner, Lester Johnson, and a stage IV cancer survivor, Laura Packard – who both talked about the importance of these tax credits to keep the care they need within reach.
