| https://www.billnelson.senate.gov/newsroom/news/new-air-force-drone-squadron-coming-to-panama-city | New Air Force drone squadron coming to Panama City | 2017-11-28 | 2017 | 2017-11 | Democrat | House | FL | Bill Nelson | N000032 | www.billnelson.senate.gov | legacy | The Air Force said they've chosen Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City to base its new squadron of unmanned aerial drones. Senator Bill Nelson, a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, received a phone call Tuesday afternoon from Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson, who gave him the news. “This is a big win not only for Panama City, but for the entire state of Florida,” Nelson said. “The 1,400 airmen and their families that will soon be heading to the area will provide a tremendous boost to the local economy.” Tyndall AFB was chosen from four finalists the Air Force named in 2016. The other three finalists were Eglin AFB, Shaw AFB in South Carolina, and Vandenberg AFB in California. The Air Force’s MQ-9 Reaper is a remotely piloted aircraft capable of loitering at high altitudes for extended periods of time, giving it a unique capability in surveilling and targeting high-value, fleeting, and time-sensitive targets. It’s mostly used by the Air Force for strike operations and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions. In addition to 24 MQ-9 Reaper drones, up to 1,400 airmen and their families will be stationed at Tyndall. | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
