Secretary Kerry's speech failed to dispel my strong concerns. Our steadfast ally Israel has sought since its founding to live at peace with its neighbors. Amidst horrific terrorist attacks, economic boycotts and the most virulent anti-Semitism aimed against it citizens, the lone Jewish state has throughout its history made enormous sacrifices in pursuit of peace. Kerry's address today was remarkably remiss in recognizing Israel’s record of seeking peace and did nothing to advance it. Support for Israel must remain bipartisan, and I will work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to advance productive measures that strengthen our commitment to our critical ally. Through robust foreign aid and defense cooperation with Israel, as well as opposing one-sided efforts to a target Israel at the United Nations, the United States can encourage direct negotiations between the parties to achieve long-sought peace for Israel, the Palestinians and the much troubled region. Most importantly, at this tumultuous time, I will work hard to assure that support for Israel is protected from partisan division and distrust.
