Truman’s establishment of the Air Force. “For more than half a century, Whiteman has served an important role in defending our freedoms and supporting our nation’s heroes as they carry out their missions,” said Blunt. “We will always be grateful for the sacrifices the brave men and women stationed at Whiteman have made and continue to make on our behalf. I’ll keep working to help ensure this installation has the resources it needs to remain a pivotal component of our nation’s military for years to come.” “Whiteman’s critical role in our nation’s defense has been cemented over generations,” said McCaskill, a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and the daughter of a World War II veteran. “The men and women who have and continue to serve at Whiteman represent the very best of our state—and I know I share the gratitude of all Missourians for their contributions to our national security, and to the rich history of this installation.” Whiteman is named in honor of Sedalia native Second Lieutenant George A. Whiteman, one of the first Airmen killed in World War II. The resolution highlights the contribution of the base, from training pilots in World War II to the 509th and 131st Bomb Wings as operators of the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber. The 131st, a Missouri National Guard unit, is the only nuclear-capable bomb wing in the Air National Guard.
