U.S. Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) issued the following statement after the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) announced changes to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations (NHTSA) 5-Star Safety Ratings for new vehicles. Among other updates, the 5-Star Safety Ratings will now encompass assessment of crash-avoidance and advanced technologies, bringing the program into the modern era. I applaud the DOTs decision to include crash avoidance systems and advanced technologies as aspects of the NHTSAs 5-Star Safety Ratings system. We have seen far too many fatal and life-altering crashes that could have been prevented with modern technology. I have urged the modernization of our transportation policies to reflect new technological advancements, and today the DOT did just that. These updates will greatly improve vehicle safety and help save lives in New Jersey and across the country. I hope the NHTSA will continue working to accelerate the positive effects of new vehicle safety technologies as they continue to emerge and evolve.
