Maintaining the existing sanctions structure sends a strong message that the U.S. will have tools at our disposal to deal with Iran’s transgressions should they continue.” Background The U.S. has had the ability to impose sanctions on Iran to block the regime from obtaining resources to support terrorism and develop weapons of mass destruction since the Iran and Libya Sanctions Act became law in 1996. The current authorization is set to expire at the end of this calendar year.
