Sherrod Brown’s (D-OH) provision that requires the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to consider additional funding for Cincinnati’s Smale Riverfront Park. Brown worked with Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH), the Cincinnati Park Board, and the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works to develop this language and ensure this provision was included. “The Army Corps of Engineers’ investment in Smale Riverfront Park has been critical to its revitalization and is a clear example of how public-private partnerships can spur economic development,” Brown said. “The park is already an essential part of the city and continued federal and local investment is good for Cincinnati and for our state.” Currently, USACE is unable allocate any additional funds to the park without a feasibility study. Under Brown’s provision – included in the Water Infrastructure Investments for the Nation Act, formerly called the Water Resources Development Act of 2016 (WRDA) – a feasibility study is required within 180 days of review, opening the door for new investment. The Cincinnati Riverfront Project helps link the Central Riverfront attractions to Downtown Cincinnati and other riverfront parks including Theodore M.
