Today, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) issued the following statement in response to a new Trump Administration proposal that punishes Ohioans who live in areas of high unemployment or who aren't paid enough for their work by making it harder for them to put food on the table. Congress recently passed a Farm Bill that helps feed families across Ohio, protects working families in need and made commonsense reforms to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The Administration's proposal directly contradicts Congress and the SNAP protections lawmakers included in the 2018 Farm Bill. It's despicable that President Trump would pull the rug out from under hungry Americans right before the holidays even after Congress made clear in the Farm Bill that these families shouldn't be forced to jump through additional bureaucratic hoops to put food on the table, said Brown, a conferee on the 2018 Farm Bill conference committee. If President Trump really wants to save taxpayer money, he should roll back the giveaways to Wall Street and millionaires in his tax law. Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced a new proposal that would put stricter limitations on states' abilities to administer the SNAP program and creates more bureaucratic hoops for Ohioans to jump through to feed themselves.
