Late last night, President Trump signed a spending package that included U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown's (D-OH) Bipartisan American Miners Act -- which will help secure pensions and healthcare for Ohio miners and their families. Brown is an original cosponsor of Sen. Joe Manchin's (D-WV) Bipartisan American Miners Act, which would shore up the 1974 Pension Plan, which is headed for insolvency due to coal company bankruptcies and the 2008 financial crisis. The Bipartisan American Miners Act would also ensure that miners, who are at risk due to 2018 and 2019 coal company bankruptcies, will not lose their healthcare. What Washington doesn't understand is that Ohio coal miners gave up raises at the negotiating table because they were counting on these pensions when they retired. This important fix will ensure these workers and their families receive the full benefits they earned over a lifetime of backbreaking work, said Brown. I am grateful to the Ohio mineworkers and retirees whose tireless efforts have brought us this far, and I am committed to continuing to fight until Congress passes a comprehensive pension solution that all Ohioans deserve.
