U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today released the following statement praising the U.S. Department of Transportations decision to award $16.5 million in grant funding to the City of Jackson for infrastructure improvements:This funding is an important investment in Jacksons continued growth. The roadway and infrastructure improvements in the vital North State Street and County Line Road corridors will benefit businesses and residents alike. I appreciate Secretary Foxxs willingness to work with the City of Jackson and the Appropriations Committee to secure this important investment for our capital city. On October 26, Cochran called Jackson Mayor Tony Yarber to inform him of the award. Congress annually appropriates funding for TIGER grants, which are awarded on a competitive and matching fund basis, and are directed toward projects that are expected to have a significant economic impact. ### BACKGROUND Project Description: This TIGER grant will provide funding to implement a lane reduction and construct complete streets, including pedestrian improvements and design elements to manage drainage and mitigate sanitary sewer overflows along North State Street and West County Line Road in Jackson. The completion of the project will enhance mobility in and around the historic Tougaloo College campus and integrate transportation improvements to connect residents and commuters to the citys economic centers. Project Highlights and Benefits: The project seeks to address critical infrastructure improvements and serve as a catalyst for sustainable development and revitalization in Jacksons economic centers. The project improves two corridors, containing some of the poorest pavement conditions in the city, to allow Jackson to better maintain and more efficiently operate heavily-used transportation infrastructure. The project also upgrades water and sewer facilities to create a healthier environment by better managing drainage and mitigating sanitary sewer overflows. 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
