C. U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) today reported that the Biloxi Fire Department has been awarded a $1.4 million federal grant to improve its emergency responsiveness. The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant will be used to increase staffing and deployment capabilities to provide adequate protection from fire and fire related hazards. The grant program is administered by the Department of Homeland Securitys Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). As first responders, firefighters play a crucial role in protecting our communities. I am pleased these funds are available to help ensure the safety of our citizens and firefighters, said Cochran, who serves on the Senate Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee that has jurisdiction over FEMA. The Biloxi Fire Department is one of 15 fire departments across the country chosen to receive grants, totaling $38.7 million, for this round of SAFER grant awards from FY2014 appropriated funding. SAFER grants provide funding directly to fire departments and national, state, local, or tribal organizations representing the interests of volunteer firefighters. These resources help communities reduce response time, increase the number of trained personnel at incident scenes, and fulfill traditional missions of fire departments. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
