U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) today said people across the nation can take inspiration from the numerous events and activities across the Mississippi Gulf Coast commemorating the states recovery from Hurricane Katrina, which made landfall 10 years ago. Cochran, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, will today join former President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush, Governor Phil Bryant and other officials at a ceremony in Gulfport to honor first responders, who were critical to Mississippis early recovery efforts after the deadly storm on Aug. 29, 2005. With every visit to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, I am more inspired by the determination and resilience of the people of our state. Ten years after the storm, the Coasts population has rebounded and our industries are thriving. I think the nation can take inspiration from the tenacity of our recovery effort, Cochran said. This recovery would not have been possible without our states comprehensive approach to the recovery, the coordination among local, state, and federal elected officials, and, most importantly, the hard work of the people of Mississippi and thousands of first responders and volunteers, he said. The Mississippi congressional delegation and I welcome President Bush to the Gulf Coast and remain committed to assisting our state as the recovery continues. Cochran is scheduled to participate on Saturday in the annual Katrina Memorial Observance in Biloxi to remember the 238 people who died in Mississippi as a result of the storm. (9 a.m., Aug. 29, MGM Park, Biloxi.) On Thursday, Cochran, Senator Roger Wicker and others joined Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Secretary Julian Castro as he reviewed HUD-related recovery projects across the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Congress made $5.36 billion available for HUD Katrina Community Development Block Grant (K-CDBG) projects, including the ongoing work to expand the Port of Gulfport. A majority of K-CDBG funding, 65 percent, was allocated for housing with the remainder used for public infrastructure and economic development. In addition to his current chairmanship, Cochran was chairman of the Committee in 2005. He serves on the appropriations subcommittee that has jurisdiction over the Federal Emergency Management Agency, which has been important for recovery efforts in Mississippi. ### | 1 | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z | 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z |
