U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), who helped author the RESTORE Act, today issued the following statement supporting the award of almost $29.8 million for environmental restoration projects on the Mississippi Gulf Coast associated with the 2010 oil spill: The long-term oil spill recovery process on the Mississippi Gulf Coast is not only necessary, but good environmentally and economically. This new round of awards is a boost for the state, coastal communities and federal agencies working together to improve the overall ecology of the region. Im pleased with this ongoing progress. The funding for Mississippi was approved by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, which is administering the Gulf Environmental Benefit Fund (GEBF) established after the devastating BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill. This third round of GEBF awards to Mississippi will support Turkey Creek Watershed conservation, oyster restoration in the Mississippi Sound, water quality improvements at beach outfalls, and habitat restoration on federal lands on the coast. For more information, visit: http://bit.ly/1QsyBl8 The GEBF-funded projects will complement projects being supported by the RESTORE Act, which Cochran helped write. This 2012 law established the Gulf Coast Restoration Fund to provide Gulf Coast states with 80 percent of the Clean Water Act fines related to the Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill. These funds will be available for locally-directed restoration projects. ### 1 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z 2026-03-30T12:14:52Z
