https://www.cochran.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/news-releases?ContentRecord_id=6c4f4fba-e45b-4744-950b-04bf41f9840c COCHRAN STATEMENT ON RYAN-MURRAY BUDGET AGREEMENT 2013-12-17 2013 2013-12 Republican House MS Thad Cochran C000567 www.cochran.senate.gov     legacy WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) today issued the following statement regarding the budget agreement reached between Representative Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.), the respective chairs of the budget committees in the House and Senate: “I do not support the budget agreement, which is well-intentioned but falls short of the mark.  I supported the Budget Control Act because it cut discretionary spending by nearly a trillion dollars and created an opportunity for another $1.2 trillion in deficit reduction.  It is the only significant deficit reduction legislation signed into law in years.  My expectation was that the sequester cuts built into that law would compel the administration and Congress to enact broad reforms to control growth in mandatory programs, which poses the greatest threat to the economy and our nation’s fiscal standing.  That has not happened. “Representative Ryan and Senator Murray made a good-faith effort to negotiate an agreement that would return some sense of order and transparency to the federal budget process.  I appreciate the difficulty of that effort, but don’t believe the agreement does enough about the most serious structural budget problems facing our nation.” On Monday, Cochran cosponsored an amendment to the budget legislation (H.J.Res.59) offered by Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) to restore more than $6.0 billion for military retirement pay for current and future military retirees.
